Asnoix is the old name for Assenois, a village in the Belgian Ardennes. Through many visits spanning several years, Sofie Knijff gradually became attached to the area. Inspired by the purity of its natural environment, she came to appreciate the different aspects of the local rural life. This book aims to remind us of the power of nature, which is reflected in the daily lives of the people living there. All the layers of society are connected: the nobility with its family domain, the village inhabitants, the hunters visiting during autumn, and the scouts building their camps in summer.

It can be simultaneously beautiful and cruel, showing a mirror of life and death. But life can also seem to stand still here. Sofie includes photographs of bygone days to show how little has changed in the course of time.
